Welcome to Part 1 of my summer home tour! I LOVE summer. I love the beach. I love the sun, the sand, the water, the colors. Everyone is happy and relaxed at the beach. Nothing would make me happier than to live in a bright and airy beach house. But I live in Pennsylvania, so the only time I can really get away with so many coastal touches in my home is during the summer. I may go a tad too far with the coastal theme, but it makes me happy, so I do it. I am going to start with a tour of my coastal style family room decorated for summer.
My love of the beach has influenced my paint colors in my home. I have all blues and greens in my home, so decorating for summer with a coastal touches is a pretty easy transition. Blue is very calming and relaxing to me and that is how I want to feel when I am at home. The paint color in my master bedroom and powder room is Benjamin Moore Beach Glass, if that gives you any indication of my paint choices. The blue walls in the family room and kitchen are not as bright blue as they show up in pictures. That frustrates the heck out of me. The color is Benjamin Moore Wales Gray and it is a greenish blue-gray color.
The window mirror over the couch is a new addition this summer and so are the two galvanized wall vases on either side. The window mirror came from Pier 1 and the galvanized vases came from Hobby Lobby. I have had various pictures over the couch over the years, but was never satisfied with how it looked. It never looked complete to me. I’m really happy with this arrangement over the couch. The sea grass basket replaced the black tray I usually use on the ottoman. The sea grass basket give a more summery look.
I know I am breaking the rule that the front feet of the furniture need to be on the area rug. Well, we recently bought new furniture and it is slightly smaller scale than the last furniture that did sit on the area rug. Now I find I need this rug in a larger size to make this happen. I just bought this area rug less than two years ago. Ugh!
You may notice that there is eucalyptus in the galvanized wall vases in some of the pictures, but I did swap them out for some sea grass (above) for the summer.
I hung this pretty coastal print by Cheri Blum over the fireplace and added some nautical accessories. The print can be found at Ballard Designs.
The nautical candle holders I got at Target a few years ago. The sailboat and buoys I picked up at either TJ Maxx or Marshalls.
This blue fish bowl I actually bought at the beach. Too cute to pass up.
This room could be an advertisement for Pottery Barn. The couch, chair and ottoman are from their PB Basic collection and I got it in performance canvas which is super great because it is very durable and very easy to clean, yet it is still soft and comfortable AND the slip covers are machine washable! Can’t beat that. The area rug and the drapes are also from Pottery Barn.
A pretty glass vase with some sea shells certainly says Summer.
I love mercury glass. Perhaps a little obsessed. I have four different styles of mercury glass lamps around my home. You will also notice a mercury glass nautical vase that the peonies on the ottoman and the mercury glass dish on the end table. Mercury glass gives a little sparkle here and there. The family room looks a little coastal all year round because of the blue and khaki colors, but with a few additional coastal touches, the room feels very summary and beachy even though I am far from the beach (does the lake in my back yard count?).
I hope you enjoyed Part 1 of my Summer Home Tour. Stop back soon for Part 2 where I will show you more summer décor around my home.
